Wonder how the pollsters explain the disparity in the numbers between those who say will vote for a woman/AA but that a smaller number believe that the nation is ready.

That's easy. Individuals being polled always feel that they are more tolerant than their fellow citizens.

In polls, people never admit they are racist or sexist. You would get 95% of Americans claiming they're for civil rights and equality, but when it comes time to vote, it's a different story. Same is true with the female president issue. Even most American women have a hard time really voting for a female candidate. Geraldine Ferraro didn't help Mondale at all. Women voted for the handsome manly Reagan, even though they disagreed with him on many issues. Just the way it is. for the time being. Though it's gradually changing I'm sure.
