Dale, agree----it is an image that may appeal to the non-lily-pure-white sector of the electorate.

Obama did not immigrate. He was born here.

The only way that I can see that he can claim the immigrant image is if his father immigrated to the United States.

As we know his father was a student at the University-----what I don't know is if his father was an immigrant. If someone knows the facts on this please post.

If his father did not immigrate here, then Obama cannot claim the immigrant image imo. He can say that his mother was American and his father was Kenyan.

If his father did not immigrate; and, if Obama has dual citizenship by virtue of his father being Kenyan he can state that.

As Obama may be challenged by a Wasp, he cannot ignore the so called Wasps he has to have something to offer these voters------many of these Wasps are baby boomers while some are retired and over 60----and most come from families that immigrated under great duress at one time or another.

Obama's non-white immigrant status will only help him in districts which are already voting democratic. The regions to worry about are places like Missouri, suburban Ohio, etc. where anyone but a white male has a hard time being voted for, particularly since these swing districts tend to be fairly conservative.

dems made the same mistake thinking Lieberman would help them carry Florida because of all the Jewish retirees there. They failed to reason that those voters were already going to vote for Gore. If Gore had picked Kerry as his running mate, he would have won above and beyond the amount of votes Jeb could steal. Plus, Kerry could have done a number on Nader, consiering the fact he's one of the co-founders of Earth Day.

Also, democrats will already get something like 95% of the black vote, so why cater to them when they could instead cut into McCain's Middle American stronghold? That said, Obama as the VP probably could be the best of both worlds. But if Obama is the Dem nominee, I predict we'd lose. Sad but true.
