Ig, Saddam wasn't given a platform at his trial to pontificate about much at all. The judges weren't entertaining what they would see as extraneous matters. Because others are also guilty, didn't make him innocent.

Dead men don't tell tales. He certainly can't be used to incriminate others now can he?

It does seem a reasonable outcome for such terrible decades for so many people. Hopefully the final result will be instructive to Libya, Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China, North Korea, and other such places. Africa seems so beyond the pale that it is more or less ignored as beyond redemption. Also, they don't have a load of oil and aren't in such geopolitically sensitive areas.
