Just a comment on your comment on geological expertise.

Unlike mathematics and physics, and somewhat like its own subject, geology is a discipline in which the oldest members of the profession often are the best. It seems to be an accretive science--somewhat like the practice of medicine--where longer and more varied experience leads to more reliable diagnoses.
