We raised Rhode Island Reds. Good eating and wonderful brown eggs. We'd start 100 chicks each spring and butcher the roosters early on for frying. We kept the hens for the eggs which we sold to the neighbors or ate ourselves. By the time the next spring came around we had butchered most of the hens that had stopped laying eggs. Those that layed got to stay through the summer until the next batch of hens started laying. We did this until I left home at 18 for the Marine Corps. Interesting life, that.
