I agree that its worth going into debt having your own home rather than renting your entire life. But that is simply the lesser of two evils.

I wouldn't look at either as evil, but rather than endlessly debate the phrasing I'll go with it for now.

If debt enables you to avoid an "evil" then it can be a good thing. If the net benefit of avoiding the "evil" is greater then the net cost of the debt than going in to debt was a good idea.

And its not just mortgages that make sense, borrowing money for education or training, or to purchase an appreciating and/or income producing asset, or to deal with an emergency, can be a very good thing.

Yes the debt in and of itself is bad, but the debt doesn't exist in isolation, it can be the result of a considered and wise decision where the positives outweigh the negatives.
