8bits,
You are right, Debs and Upton Sinclair were not Jewish and my use of "primary advocates" is an overstatement. But maybe restated as "most effective" advocates might be closer to the mark.

I don't think many folks realize that we received the vast majority of our Jewish immigration in one big single wave, roughly from 1881 to 1914, and mostly from a single place, the Jewish Pale of the Czar's Russia. And in Russia, as a consequence of their mistreatment and long running conflict there, many of these folks had become very committed to the political philosophy of Marx and this radical ideology they brought with them.

A very interesting read on this topic is "World of Our Fathers" by Irving Howe.

Take Upton Sinclair's EPIC program, it surely owes much more to Marx than to anything else. And I'm not really with you on the link between the American left and Christianity. Our progressives, Bryan to La Follette to Burton Wheeler, were NOT socialists, though with the passage of time there is slippage in that direction.

Seems to me that American Jews over time developed a very effective system of political activism, used in the beginning to advance the ideology of the Marxist left and then later on have used this same network to effectively stampede our political leadership in other directions, endless and mostly unquestioning support for Israel is one example.
