There is simply nowhere near enough gold for it to act as money for more than a few Aztec-like creatures. It would have to be valued at something like $10,000 per ounce to fulfill that function at the current economic level of the world and the population.

At that price, it would become hugely attractive and legions of people would divert their efforts to digging gold and stealing it.

People would be digging gold like the Easter Islanders made Moai. Pointless efforts for a doomed tribe.
