>Interesting take. Over the years, I have gotten to know some Jews with numbers tattooed on them. And there is a division amongst them on the topic of Israel. Most are fervent supporters of Israel. But some sense a disquieting aroma of jackboots. And they are greatly saddened.

Hell, I'm now the director of a Jewish organization and I can't really support Israel these days. And I'm not alone. Far from it.

I also know quite a few non Jews with tattoos on them. They also differ in their opinion about Israel. Now with that said, how old were your tattooed friends? See I had a Jewish girl friend born in and grown up in Tel Aviv for quite a few years. Actually we are still quite close and I'm seeing her next week as a matter of fact in Eilat. She did indeed bring me up to speed on the difference between the Israelis and Jews, the local people of Israel and the international Jews as proto typed by those in NYC in her opinion. So it's amazing how scareingly close the opinion of a lovely war hating and capital punishment detesting young woman from Israel Hitler came in his original ideas from his book.

"A good piece on the topic, from one of my favorite bloggers:"

Its unfortunate that so few people see that distinction. The aggressive attack on Lebanon should have made it clear......but it did not. From Z's blogger:

"The original spirit of Israel was one of the Kumbaya Yiddles, idealistic leftists seeking a social laboratory to create a caring communal corner of Creation. But, of course, the actual history ended up elevating the modern-day Maccabees. Judaism after WWII became Zionism and Zionism once it was on the ground required a much more aggressive stance. The generals were given the lion’s share of the social capital. All of a sudden, the spirit of the religion as practiced became one that more resembles Chanukah than Yom Kippur.

And that is precisely why we were taught to speak Hebrew with a Middle Eastern accent. We were being prepared to go to Israel. It was the first aggressive step in our indoctrination. We were being made into Chanukah Jews."
