There is no question in my mind that we will be able to build a strong AI machine in the not too distant future

there might not be a question in your mind, but there is still a question in the minds of researchers who say it's impossible. if it's impossible, then it doesn't matter how much time is given to complete the impossible task (i agree with you that 30 years vs. 1000 years is not a big difference on an interplanetary scale). i don't know whether to believe them or to believe the Strong AI proponents, but it seems people can make arguments both ways at this point.

There is no question in my mind that we will be able to build a strong AI machine in the not too distant future -- it doesn't really matter whether it's within 30 years or within 1000.

I agree. Just look at the advances we have made in the last ten years in important areas of intelligence that we do understand.

There is the storage, organization, and access of a massive amounts of information.

There is exponential increases in the speed of computation.

There is rudimentary advances in speech and visual recognition.

Ten years or 5000 years in cosmic terms is almost no time at all. If we progress in the understanding of intelligence at nearly the same rate as we have over the last 5000 years, it would be impossible to forecast our understanding in 500,000 years.
