Z, > I don't care what he thinks of me; he should not have to live in his car.

Answer this for me: If he had lost it all at the blackjack table, should society bear the burden of his bad decision?

Never mind the circumstances that put him in his car in the first place. I want to know where personal responsibility comes into play in your world where the "poverty floor" is raised to a nice, comfortable level.

"why can't we keep raising it?"

Because Elroy would get upset?

"It's obviously possible; our "poverty floor" is quite a bit higher than, say, Ethiopia's... why can't we keep raising it?"

I say, a van down by the river for everyone living in their car!

Really though, if this country is going to have homeless, and we ARE, we're wealthy enough to at least provide barracks or some kind of a place for those without means to sleep. It would cost less than a week in Iraq..
