Ted, > His way of thinking is foreign to probably most people on this thread. And it doesn't surprise me that this is your takeaway from the story. Unfortunately that was the least important aspect of the story.

Let me put it this way. I could "feel their pain" until it hurts me just as much as it hurts them, and that might give them some blessed comfort, but in the end that is not going to solve anything, especially in this impersonal world that we live in.

Societal handouts are just that, cold and impersonal and meant to be exploited. Personal relationships, on the other hand, are more priceless than gold. I don't know the guy personally, so unfortunately I can't provide that. But I'd say the interaction between you and him (even at a blackjack table) was worth more than the money he won, especially since you and your friend eventually helped him get back on the right track and take his winnings. Now that to me is God (or fate) being merciful to a guy like him.

Plus look at it this way. If he didn't find himself in dire straits, he would probably never know what it's like to be close to homelessness. Then perhaps he'd go through the rest of his life being a selfish jackass like that guy Tenchusatsu.

Sincerely,

Oh, you know. ;-)
