Can Barack Obama be a white man with an American-sounding name who's centrist enough to win moderate-conservative swing districts? I think not.

Obama is a political star with great talents, but right now he's merely the newest in a long line of alternative candidates democrats love to embrace early in the race. Remember in 1999 the Dem base was wild about Bill Bradley and poo-poo'ed Gore. Bradley didn't win a single primary. Jesse Jackson, Jerry Brown, Eugene McCarthy, Paul Tsongas, Howard Dean, etc. etc. See the pattern? and every single one of those guys, including Obama is also someone the GOP would love to run against. The only alternative type who ever did get nominated was McGovern and he lost 49 states. Plus he was a white war hero with a perfect last name.
