There are plenty of skeletons from the Roman era with worn-down teeth from grit in the bread. These are more likely to be from the common folks, as the richer people had slaves to sift their flour and remove the grit. As you pointed out, lead was also a problem.

Here in our era, I have my own little home flour mill. Plus an automatic bread maker, so I can have truly fresh bread from high-quality Montana wheat whenever I want it.
