"nor too few citizens"

Compared to China? I'd say there are few countries on earth with a properly low number of humans. A matter of opinion.

But then, I love wild places and open spaces, with plenty of wildlife.

There have been some unexpected consequences. The birth rate ratio in China and India has been 117 boys to 100 girls for a long time. There are now millions of young men who are incapable of establishing a traditional family life simply due to unavailability. The wealthier and more affluent are able to attract available females. The numbers of frustrated young men now number in the millions (extrapolate from the population size). This is a growing phenomenon world wide and one that I don't think we have ever dealt with before in history.

The human trafficking industry is becoming one of the top three organized criminal activities in the world. We do know what happens when you put a few young men together with no real productive purpose, they begin to act like marauding gangsters. What will happen when there are half a billion or so coming from newly established super power nations?
