Quite simply, no money is lost by an investor till the share is sold.

Not always true. If the stock stocks goes to no bid, and does not come up, then you lose it all.

If the company declares bankruptcy, then you lose it all.

Another sure way to end up with almost nothing is to hold the same stock through several r/s's. Happens all the time.
