Now if it depended on only the Democrats screwing up, they might have a shot. But to be lucky also?

I don't think the Dems will screw up for until after the 2008 elections. After that, they will probably get full of themselves and start to mess up but right now, I think they are very much wanting to put the GOP in its place.
