You can get a very good helmet for under $100.......Giro is a good brand.

I would recommend that if you do, get one with air vents in case you get hot. Mine has vents that open. I'll do that for spring skiing. I just won't ski any more without one. Makes me feel a bit more secure and they are warm.

Boots are really important. If you aren't going to ski allot, rent them. Just make sure you rent new or nearly new boots.
