The socialist Samajwadi Party government headed by Mulayam Singh Yadav had launched a scheme in 2006 to provide financial support to girls from economically weaker sections. The scheme "Kanya Vidya Dhan" or Girls Education Fund promised to give one lakh girl students a grant of 20,000 rupees each for higher education. The angry girls smashed the windowpanes of the office of a local functionary of the educational department and blocked the traffic to protest delay in reimbursement of the grant. "We are protesting today because we are tired of coming here everyday. They just keep telling us to come tomorrow and enquire. So many days have passed but nothing is happening," said Rekha, a protesting girl. The state officials, however, refused to comment on the incident or their complaints. The state government had claimed the scheme as success and even enhanced it to increase the number of beneficiaries and sanctioned an amount of 6 billion rupees.
