You think living in your car when its 30º is okay? Damn! You are more willing to rough it than I am.

You have to consider the alternatives. It saved me thousands and thousands of dollars one year when my finances were shaky. I still contributed to my 401(k) enough to get the full match from my employer and had an HCRA. Also there was a shower at work, which was a tremendous help.

Of course, you'd want a blanket or two. You crank up the heat as much as possible before you park, and if you wake up cold, you just fire up the engine for half an hour. Which is a lot like living indoors if you turn the heat off before going to bed. What's more important is being able to recline your seat all the way back so you can lie down and relax. I kept all my stuff in the trunk so the inside of my car didn't look like I'd been living in it for months.

The biggest problem is the people who approach your car. Usually they were cops who'd interrupt my sleep to check me out and tell me to move on. By the end, I'd unconsciously learned how to banter with them so the last couple of times they just went away and left me alone. I mean, if I'm just too tired to drive "home" or my contact lenses were hurting so much that I had to take them out, what are they going to do? The worst time was when three punks tried to box me in with their truck and got out and surrounded me. They probably wanted to rape me, and I was calculating how I'd cut them with my pocketknife if they broke in, but I escaped by driving off the road and squeezing past the truck. The worst weather turned out to be the best, because no one was out to disturb me.

When I was going through it, I felt vulnerable and didn't want anyone to know. After a while, a couple of my friends found out and let me stay with them in exchange for doing odd jobs. Some other people thought I was super crazy, but it all passed eventually. Some people think hitch-hiking is crazy, too, but again, consider the alternatives.
