"A flat tax is a better way to motivate productive people. Complex tax regimes are great for accountants, lawyers and other leaches of a mature economy. The US would also benefit from a flat tax."

Agree on all THREE points --- as opposed to a *complicated*, loophole and 'special tax preference item' ridden tax system --- a simple flat tax system is MUCHO superior.

As you note... compliance costs are also lower. And, (to take the US economy as an example) if one could eliminate or drastically reduce our estimated ANNUAL $250 Billion to $300 Billion cost of complying with our massively over-complex tax code... you could ADD that amount of money BACK INTO the economy (each year!) as boost by lowering the tax rate by that hundreds of Billions amount. But, only if the new tax system is SIMPLE and perceived as fair, thus easy & low cost to comply with.

(The issue of Flat Income Tax vs. graduated income tax is, of course, separate from the question of Income tax vs. Consumption tax... but, when compared to commonly seen sales tax systems, or the burdensome and complex Value Added Tax systems that are commonly seen in Europe, and have been proposed here, most Flat Rate Income Tax proposals usually have at least the virtue of being *simpler*, and thus offering the potential of much lower compliance costs... and therefore, hopefully, the possibility of even lower tax rates.)
