Within reason. I've read and experienced that there's such a thing as accelerating too slowly. You not only want to get to top gear fairly quickly since it's the most fuel-efficient, you also want to get away from acceleration mode and into cruising mode fairly quickly. Of course, full throttle up to the speed limit would take it too far and cost too much fuel.

Personally, I accelerate "semi-briskly" until I'm up to my cruising speed. Most modern engines are very efficient in light to moderate acceleration. They also (especially if they're performance oriented) are horribly inefficient at full throttle. My Subaru WRX STi, for example, intentionally runs very rich at full throttle because when it's under full boost, getting cheap on the fuel would be a good way to aerate the pistons. Extra fuel is thrown in to cool the pistons enough that they're less prone to melting.

Speaking of the STi, I've been seriously considering trading mine in on the 2007 for the improved heads and especially the taller 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the tranny. Since it's a track toy, the better gears would be reason enough to get a newer one. Nearly any track I've been to has punished that car for having 4th so low and 5th so high. They didn't change 5th for 2007 (I wish they would've) but at least 4th is tall enough to have you making more power when you go to 5th.

But I'm waiting to see the 2008 STi. I don't like the 08 WRX and despite the 2007's tranny and 20 more horses, I'm not optimistic the STi version will strike my fancy enough to get it. The WRX version has none of the visual "attitude" of the 07. And I don't think a huge spoiler (which I'm reading it won't have anyway) would help matters much.
