Stock in HDTV Maker Syntax-Brillian Rise After Analyst Ups Price Target, Estimates

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of high-definition TV maker Syntax-Brillian Corp. gained 13.2 percent Friday, and hit a new 52-week high during the trading session, after an analyst raised his target price on the stock.

Michael Tieu of Brean Murray Carret & Co. raised his target to $18, up from $14, for the Tempe, Ariz.-based company, and boosted his estimates for the next six quarters. He now expects the company to take in $196 million revenue in its fiscal second quarter, ended in December, producing earnings per share of 23 cents, up from $188 million and 22 cents per share.

Analysts, on average, expect sales of $189.2 million and profit of 20 cents per share for the December quarter.

Tieu called Syntax-Brillian "one of our top picks for 2007" as a result of "home runs" in North America and Asia. Shipments in both markets surpassed expectations, and the company is attracting large retailers, he said in a client note.

Although LCD TV prices are falling, Tieu said, profit margins are likely to grow.

Syntax-Brillian stock rose $1.25, to close at $10.74 on the Nasdaq. The stock reached an 52-week high of $10.82 during the session, surpassing its previous peak of $9.95, set in early December.
