Let me give you another slant on that capitalism idea John.

Two things to ponder:

1) pure capitalism just doesn't work. Society has not only a right but an obligation to monitor it. A good example are the sweatshops of the early 1900's. They were just horrible and especially the child sweatshops. Our entire country was controlled with a tight fist by just a few robber barons. Teh rockefellers, Morgons, etc were ruthless and controlled everything.

Why we need unions. Workers were really exploited.

2) This is a little esoteric, and it is the rebuttle of the Horatio Alger argument i.e. "pulling ones self up by the bootstraps: 16% of the population has an IQ below 86 (one standard deviation below the mean). People with IQ's below 86 have a difficult time with abstract concepts and making it in life in general. Another 10% have disabling mental problems. 25% of the population.

The above is no ones fault, but think of society as a tribe. Society has the right to tell the other 75% of the population they need to share their "kill i.e. metaphorical deer-lol" with those other 25% which are not as good at hunting through no fault of their own.

Those of us lucky enough to not have those afflictions should be grateful we were lucky, and it is luck, and be glad to help our less fortunate brothers and sisters.
