Kerry desperately wanted not to concede. But there were fewer absentee votes left to count than the margin. If Kerry had refused to concede he would have had to produce hard evidence of massive election fraud. That evidence wasn't there, yet. Some of it has been collected since, but it took many months (see bradblog.com), and much of the evidence is gone with the wind because of the paperless voting machines and the fact Blackwell destroyed all the ballots and wiped the hard-drives.

In short, we may never know if Kerry was cheated out of the entire enough or not. All we know is that he (like Gore) was cheated, and he was also dishonestly smeared. But the day after the election we know he had no choice but to do what he did. He simply didn't have enough evdience or absentee votes.

BTW, blame the cheaters, now those who are cheated. I see a lot of DEms blaming Kerry for being smeared and cheated. But I don't see any Repubs blaming McCain for being cheated and smeared by Bush in 2000. The GOP is smart in that way. We Dems are sometimes too tough on our own people.

The fact is, come 2008, who will be the best candidate to beat McCain who is also highly qualified to be a great president? That is the only question we should be focused on, not who was to blame for 2000 or 2002 or 2004? If we blame everyone for those defeats we'll have no one left except some new face who hasn't been battle-tested yet.
