Funny, though, she's Latvian, and former Soviets tend to hate the Japanese, no? Something tells me you're not to close to your girlfriend. As far as I know the Latvians hate the Russians a hell of a lot more than they hate the Japanese, so she wouldn't like being called a former Soviet unless you emphasize "former" and then say how horrible a fate that must have been....
