I grew up in the SW, and did we EVER have sandstorms....before mass building of home happened in our area, there was nothing to hold down the sand and dirt (except cactus and sagebrush of course)....my Mom wore out two vacuum cleaners in just a few years because every single morning, we could expect to find the window sills filled with sane from the wind blowing the sand of the previous night.... and that was with the windows shut too....

I know, because most of the time that was the "kids" job in the morning before school, to go vacuum up all of that sand....
