If Saddam remains alive, the very fact that he is still alive could somehow inspire Iraqi resistance against the Occupying Power thereby making things doubly difficult for them. The Iraqi resistance has come to stay. Every Iraqi, Shia or Sunni, is convinced that US troops must leave their soil. And we have Bush infusing more troops to battle the Shiite Mahdi Army and the Iraqis. One thing that is not yet on the radar is the Kurds who want a independent Kurdistan. For that, they will have to clash with Turkey. But for now it is the Shia-Sunni civil war with the US caught in the middle.

When it comes to reasons the U.S. didn't try Saddam in an international court, you don't take notice of the obvious motivation to allow Iraqis to take care of Iraqi business. Nor do you recognize that when the Kurds were gassed by Saddam, the U.S. was plainly upset and certainly not a knowing accomplice in such acts. Despite our support of Iraq against Iran, we did not condone such actions. That's just the way it was, despite your words to the contrary, IMHO. The evidence you interpret is out as you know, and so there was no reason to fear "shameful exposure" from an international court trial of Saddam, even if your interpretation is correct. Saddam lived over three years after his capture, yet you write of "the great haste in disposing of Saddam !!!" It just doesn't fly, nor does your argument in general, IMHO. Dan B.
