True, communism was totally corrupted. Back during the Great Depression when workingclass people were starving to death quasi "communism" was the official policy of the US government, called the New Deal. And it worked great. Just read Johnny Cash's boyhood story.

But the Soviets turned it into a military dictatorship not that different from fascism. And the rightwing in this country along with the Soviets responded with their Cold War where fear of ultimate apocalypse was used by both governments to crack down on liberties. The Soviets were much worse, but instead of Gulags we had McCarthyism, a process by which anyone liberal or leftwing was professional ruined, including great American artists like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Aaron Copeland, etc.

Also, we should be aware that the threat of the Soviet military machine was much exaggerated, similar to the way some exaggerate the dangers of Saddam Hussein or North Korea's longrange missiles. Fear = big military contracts.

The "Founding Fathers" of modern-day communism has stripped out any religion or theology whatsoever, leaving behind a system where communal sharing is forced and God is replaced by personality cults.

I like personality. What's wrong with personalities?
