Everyone was bad mouthing the Gators, even here in S. Fla. sports writers weren't giving them much of a chance.

I was thinking of you as I watched the game. How did Ohio State get rated so highly? Notre Dame was overrated also.

Chris Leak will now be considered as a "top ten" pick in the draft. He is small by today's standards, [6' 210lbs] but looked good.

This will cost the Ohio State quarterback, Troy Smith, a bundle. He went in as a "top one or two pick." That is worth about 20 mil. Now he will be lucky to be in the "top 30" and sign for 2 mil.

The "Combine," where they will work out, will mean a lot to both of them now.

I get a kick out of the fact that the Combine gives all of the players the "Wonderlic" test. It's 50 questions in 12 minutes. Here's a sample if you want to try it. espn.go.com I used to knock the socks off this test in my 20's, when most corporations used it as an entry test if you were going in for a management interview. Then, in the 70's, it became almost illegal to use it. Too "Racist." Now 70% of the players taking it at the combine are black. A score of 20 indicates an IQ of 100.

Wikipedia: Average scores

This assessment roughly corresponds to examples from Paul Zimmerman's The New Thinking Man's Guide to Pro Football. According to Zimmerman, examples of average scores include for each position,

* Offensive Tackle - 26
* Center - 25
* Quarterback - 24
* Guard - 23
* Tight End - 22
* Safety - 19
* Linebacker - 19
* Cornerback 18
* Wide receiver - 17
* Fullback - 17
* Halfback - 16

While an average football player usually scores around 20 points, The Wonderlic, Inc claims a score of at least 10 points suggests a person is literate [1]. Furthermore, when the test was given to miscellaneous people of various professions, it was observed that the average participant scored a 24. Examples of scores from everyday professions included,

* Chemist - 31
* Programmer - 29
* Newswriter - 26
* Bank teller - 22
* Security Guard - 17

Fortunately, I had a magazine to distract me from that game, as I was obligated to root for my wife's alma mater. Poor, poor Woody Hayes.
