I remember a day in physics class we discussed creation vs evolution. The teacher was the referee and wrote notes on the blackboard. Couple of kids ran to the principal, but he came back the next day and gave a pretty good speech about respecting other's positions, no matter how wrong you think they are.

Could we start with how babies are made and how much it costs to take care of a family? Maybe throw in how to balance a checkbook? Read a map? Kids aren't dumb; they know how their latest cellphones inside and out.

Today's generation is growing up dumber than the last and dumber than the last. And the solution is not more money.

Not current events, and not politics, and the biggest reason why is the Vietnam war. No teacher wants to go near that.

I plan on having current events and discussing politics in my classroom. You can come learn from me. <g>
