If you look at the fine print on every digital map, you will easily find Google Maps use Navteq, Yahoo Maps use Navteq, Microsoft (both local.live.com and Streets & Trips) Maps use Navteq, MapQuest uses Navteq, Zillow uses Navteq, …… The list is endless.

If you use a GPS, you will find that 80%+ of GPS devices in the world use Navteq maps and software. If your GPS map gets out of date, prepare to shed $70 for the update.

If you look at the NVT “profile” and “statistics”, you’ll find that on average, each NVT only add about $280k to its annual revenue – lower than many software development businesses. Why? Because NVT hires more than a thousand drivers to take notes about road and signs changes around the World and update the map data constantly. This creates an very high entry barrier.

Where can we find another business that has a monopoly over a booming business like GPS, PND, and Location Related Service?
