Spent a week in Guanacaste - the North Pacific part of Costa Rica. They call it the "Wild West" of their country. But there was really nothing "wild" about it - except maybe for the unspoiled nature over large areas, and the need to drive pretty long distances on unpaved dirt roads. But even those roads were not too bad - the Suzuki SUV which we rented had over 30K kilometers on it, and was scraped up a bit, but still going strong.

Generally, it is a very nice place. Very beautiful, with still large areas of jungle remaining. Beaches are great - in many places the sand is actually black. Not muddy - just black - the sand originating from volcanic rock. Very nice.

Driving along the roads we encountered from time to time large extended families of monkeys... climbing and jumping from tree to tree, carrying their babies. Not really a normal everyday sight where I come from.

People are very polite and friendly, and not yet tired of tourists - they actually seem to be curious about the arrivals, and generally warm and welcoming. It takes a while to get used to sabaneros - cowboys - on horseback, greeting you as you meet them on the road. Be prepared that many strangers will greet you very politely in the streets.

Restaurants are inexpensive, and the food is simple and good - but there aren't too many of them. The same goes for grocery stores. In fact, the best strategy is to visit the supermarket in Liberia - before you hit the countryside. Also, fill up the tank whenever you see a gas station - it can be a while before you'll find the next one.

All in all, it is a beautiful and fun place. I hope to travel there again.
