Encouraging free will and tolerance is far from setting a standard. It is just an expression of individual responsibility without recourse on other people. I might choose to meditate, exercise, practice yoga, abstain from booze, go to church, and have children. All these things require an enormous amount of responsibility. I would not set any one of these standards on anyone else. In fact, I would argue that everyone should be protected from having to practice any one of these dedications.

I get extremely uncomfortable with a society that takes away individual rights. Transfats, cigarettes, booze and abortion are civil liberties that men and women should be free to enjoy. I think it's ethically hazardous to see the government in this country start banning cooking oils in places like NYC. Leave it to the lawmakers in NYC and California to start legislating dubious standards, not me.
