Huh? Since the 1960s, we have had almost continual involvement in the ME. Coincidently, it was around the 1960s we started producing less oil than we consumed. The more dependent we have become on foreign oil, the greater the American participation in Middle East affairs. It doesn't take much to see a correlation between our need for oil, American participation in the affairs of the ME, and the rise of Islamic terrorism against US and the growing concern over national security. And of course, oil has been a major denigrator of the American environment.

1. You totally skipped Israel. I would argue America's issues with the ME have much more to do with support for Israel than with our decision to buy their oil.

2. As for oil being a major problem with the American environment that's not due to foreign purchases of oil. If the US wants to limit oil usage for environmental reasons, that decision should be made separately from the price of oil.
