Just as the mistreatement of sadam at the hanging was repugnant, so was the reaction of the sunnis in somehow glorifying saddam. I would imagine that the shiaa and kurds were very pissed off at their attempt at martyrdom for saddam. I have more understanding for why someone might piss on his grave than for someone who labels a known butcher to be a hero because he killed mostly shia and kurds.

We had a lot of people, including military, who didn't think it made sense, and tried frantically to stop it, knowing how destructive a circus execution would be.

Had two particular American officials not been on leave, it's considered likely they would have been able to postpone the handover until a less inflaming execution had been arranged. That was unfortunate. One of them had direct access to the President, it seems.

Like Condi.

Of course, since Condi gave the go-ahead, you will defend it, whatever the results.

If after what we've spent in blood and money, including on SH's custody and trial, and are continuing to spend, we can't postpone a hanging for a few days until it won't become a PR disaster?

That's absurd and weak and inept and lame and what are we doing there, then, and why are we now going to send more troops over there to die or come home maimed? We can't protect our mammoth investment to the extent of having somebody stonewall and say, "Not right now. Some details need to be arranged, and I don't have the authority to authorize the turnover yet, you know how paperwork is, and my boss is out of town, just can do it yet, but soon! Sorry."

Oh yes, I know why we can't procrastinate a hanging for a few days at the cost of pissing off a few Iraqis (would that be worse than having outraged uncountable numbers in the ME? Really?), but can procrastinate getting out of that mess your dope got us into at the cost of lives, many many lives, and even more broken lives, and even more broken hearts. I won't even mention the money, omg the money. It's quite breathtaking. It's incredible. You think it's been worth the blood and the taxpayers' money, paying, paying, on into the future?

The escalation is about the Legacy. Our new troops will be shot at for politics and his ego. Yech. I see that his Iraq approval rating is down to 26%. That's you, right? You still admire him?

I'm leaving and won't be back for at least a week, btw.
