While the 3G licences in China are on hold and TD-SCDMA blunders around trying to string some bits and bytes together while falling ever further behind international developments, CDMA2000 must be gaining ground.

I suppose CDMA2000 can be upgraded to any of the 3G technologies and no licence is needed.

So, in a way, it's a defacto adoption of Mq's strategy of Gung Ho CDMA2000 by China. With their vast economies of scale and low costs, they could, even with 7% export royalty, decimate the GSM Guild around the world and turbo-charge CDMA2000 everywhere, making CDMA2000 almost as though it's invented in China.

I wonder if China Unicom has been upgrading their CDMA2000 network. It was made backward compatible, so I'd be surprised if they haven't done some upgrades and test marketing in some areas, to see what customers think.
