During the Cold War, when the Arab countries became Soviet client states (mainly due to our support of Israel), it made a kind of sense, as a counterbalance to them in the region and a way to test our technoligies against theirs without WW III in proxy wars.

Now, it makes no sense at all. It actually works against our national interest. Israel has nukes and can certainly defend itself. It's in no danger. Let's wean them from our tit..
