Biggest rap I've heard is that it's a power gobbler. Constantly recharging or you've got to carry a bunch of batteries with you. The limitations of portable electric power is a real barrier to a lot of applications. Not sure dumping tax dollars onto researchers is the answer. If you've got a half way promising idea I wouldn't think attracting development capital should be a problem considering the vast riches that will flow to whomever cracks the problem.
