I thought the consensus was that last year was
the year they'd have the IPO. But you see over
and over again, things have changed and VC's
want to be sure valuations are correct and all
that and their companies hit the ground running.

There aren't scads of biotechs ready to be taken
over. Obviously DPII spent some time to get
everything in order, and it looks to me like GLGC
is headed that way now.

But I don't know if Perlegen can make money, you
wonder if the VC's and Pfizer put so much money
into it, and now they're kinda stuck.

I would be perfectly happy if GLGC carved off the
DR unit and just sold it off for $10 or $20M to
Infinity! I think I found out that the MLNM stuff
is in Cambridge anyway. Pay a small dividend or
something, then slice away the rest of the cash
for a PERL IPO and such.

Probably you get these VC's and dealmakers at the
table and everybody has to have their slice--and
it all takes an eternity. Plus, if they're smart
they watch boards like this, and they just let
the cash bleed away until they get a final signal
of capitulation. If I sell my shares to whoever
is gathering them up...then they'll finally get it
all done, heh. Punishment for figuring it out ahead
of time.

Of course, I haven't actually figured it out.
It is entirely possible that GLGC will bleed away
another $20M each quarter for the next year, and
my shares get that lovely .pk at the end!

My wife stayed up late and watched a show
last night--genomics, personalized medicine,
Venter was there, Watson--the whole deal.
She starts talking to me about Gleevec,
targeted and combinations of meds, meds
that are completely effective for their
subsets of patients, etc etc.

So I say to her, yes, exactly. That is why
you own the stock you own. But you cannot
actually forecast how it plays out.

Likewise, sure, chance of snow. I was up late
last night doing the forecast... There is
still some onshore flow--showers coming down
the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and those combined
with the instability (it is very cold aloft) and
the modified arctic front etc etc.

Yes, it will snow somewhere, some amount.
Best guess, some snow in Whatcom county along
the boundary--then an inch or two for a lot of
folks as the modified arctic front drops south.

Same thing as the stock market--predictions and
speculation. Wall Street is more exciting though,
the poker element--who wants shares, who is
bluffing etc. But VC's, hedgies, and mutual
funds to some degree control how it plays out...
