"How we got from the 2001 inauguration to 'here and now' is remarkable." Like I have pointed out before, Germany at least had an excuse. Between losing WWI, the global depression and the cute idea of the Wiemar Republic to inflate their way out of their war debts, the average German had some real grievances to act out. We didn't have any of that. While things could have been better, we were in the best position we have ever been. We were respected, prosperous and had unquestioned influence. Now we are rolling towards the biggest mistake in our history, with a leader who talks to God and feels people praying for him. If it was a novel or a movie, people would pan it because it is so implausible. There is a novel The Iron Dream. It is set in an alternate history where Hitler moves to the US after WWI and eventually writes a science fiction novel. The first part is the novel, which is set in a post apocalyptic world, but it follows a Hitler-like character who rises to power in a country that is trying to keep its ethnic purity intact. He does so by staging mass rallies to pump up the people and eventually gains control. The last half is a long critique of the first part by a fictitious professor who points out how the first part was implausible. No country would ever allow a person like that to come to power.
