Members of the a cappella Baker's Dozen were performing at a party in San Francisco at the new year when their rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" apparently sparked taunts and threats from fellow partygoers.

As the group left the house, they were attacked by dozens of assailants, suffering scrapes, black eyes and concussions, said Connecticut's News Channel 8.

"Besides any bruising or scrapes to the face, the main injury I suffered was I broke my jaw in two places," one of the singers, 18-year-old Sharyar Aziz, was quoted as saying

Much more troublesome is Iran's access to the whole of the Persian Gulf, their possession of LOTS of mobile anti-shipping missiles that can be fired from the shore, shutting down the oil shipments from the Persian Gulf.

Anti-shipping missiles

Iran's sea, air and land-launched anti-shipping missile arsenal is key to its ability to damage large commercial and military vessels in the Gulf, and for this reason it remains almost entirely under IRGC control.

Iran's C-801K and C-802 anti-shipping missiles are advanced sea-skimming missiles. The latter is now indigenously produced as the Noor. Iran's defence industries are upgrading the missile's guidance and improving its ability to be fired "over the horizon" and to acquire targets when it reaches a predestined point.

As they require relatively few support vehicles and are capable of quickly firing 12 missiles, these provide survivable close-range anti-shipping missile cover along the Iranian coastline and island chain. Iran is also producing an enlarged and modernised Silkworm (the 150 km land-based Raad anti-shipping missile) to give it long-range reach across the Gulf from the Iranian mainland.

Given that Iran used 14 year olds to clear minefields the hard way during the Iran-Iraq war, they aren't likely to just fume about an attack, despite the casualties. Assuming they have the same anti-tank weaponry that was used in Lebanon, things could get pretty nasty, pretty quick. We could lose a large percentage of the 300k military personnel and contractors we have in Iraq. How that plays domestically is an open question. It is likely that such an event would be received poorly. But there are those who will swing to support an open conflict with Iran. If there is any significant opposition, there is always martial law...

First, any attack on Iran will not be resolved overnite. Its unlikely the Iranians will capitulate. Instead, the Iranians will dig in and fight. I think that will be seen by Americans as an unnecessary expansion of an already unpopular war. I can't imagine Bush will come out of this with his head.
