I agree that they are not all-powerful... but they are hardly powerless, either! ANY PRESIDENT that comes in with a big electoral win (a 'mandate'), and or who benefits from single Party control of the government branches has an opportunity to do right. To reform/restrain and cut wasteful deficit spending (or even promote systemic changes, such as Constitutional changes, etc.) Whether he takes up that challenge... is another thing entirely. (No one likes to be the guy who takes the punch bowl away at a party --- although that might be exactly the correct and responsible thing to do.)
