Police searching for a gunman flooded into the area around The Hospital for Sick Children in downtown, just hours before the prime minister arrived for a visit.

Police say two men in a vehicle were being investigated near Spadina and Grange Aves. around 4:30 a.m. when one of them pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officer.

Both then ran away. One of the suspects was arrested nearby, while the other remains at large.

A car was also seized nearby and ammunition was found inside.

Just before noon Thursday, schoolkids at nearby Orde St. Public School came across a gun and police were quickly notified. Police say they believe it may have been dumped by one of the suspects.

Security was already tight in the area, with RCMP dog teams searching buildings prior to a 11 a.m. press conference featuring Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Health Minister Tony Clement.

The press conference went ahead as scheduled.

The suspect still being sought is described as white, in his 30s, 5-foot-six to 5-foot-seven and having a possible Eastern European accent.
