Smolar's instant take: "Cisco wants to keep the voice over IP part of the business. That Apple wouldn't agree to that tells me that that VOIP where Apple is going, too."

That makes the most sense of any theory I've seen. They obviously have VOIP ambitions and don't want to end up in yet another Apple Records/Beatles mess.

That reminds me: did anyone else find the way Jobs implied a Beatles agreement/deal while simultaneously back-handing them 'interesting'?
