Regardless, your idea that the US education system produces less critical and creative thinkers than the various education systems around the world remains incorrect. The brightest on the planet immigrate to the US for the opportunities available to advance individually that are lacking in most of the rest of the world.

You are going to be hard pressed to come up with a country where Americans are relocating to in order to have greater entrepreneurial training and opportunity than they have in the US.

Without knowing more about how well it navigates, it is hard to say whether or not it is on par with current US research. From what I have been able to glean, it doesn't handle stairs or a cluttered environment very well. But I gather that it is addressing a different set of problems. Most universities don't have $1 million plus to sink into something like this, so they are attacking problems like navigating in a room and dealing with stairs and things like that. Now personally, I think they are barking up the wrong tree and need to work more on abstracting the environment and working with higher order symbols, instead of trying to brute force the situation, but...
