For years in TV land, the action heroes were tough cowboys and detectives. The bureaucrats were the wimpy backstabbing suits back at the office. But in the 2000s, tough guys are so passe, history, dinosaurs. The new tough guys are bureaucrats who kill. And they kill rather efficiently. That "24" reflects that bureaucratic culture back to us once a week, with all those action-figure suits taking meetings, and that we recognize it as "Office Space with Guns," is one reason the show is a hit.
