The Shah was done in before Carter came into power. Reagan didn't do anything about Iran either. In fact he illegally shipped arms to them. And GW Bush is a much worse president than Carter. For oine thing, Carter was honest and ethical. Bush is not at all. Carter cares about the American people. Bush cares only about his special interests and himself. After Vietnam (think Iraq now but three times as bad) our military was so exhausted they needed 5-10 years to recover. For Ford and Carter to engage Iran militarily was out of the question. Don't forget the Societs protected Iran too. And Iran had a huge military bought from ther USA. The Shah had been asking for it from his own people for 10 years, torturing them and living like a western playboy.The Shah did himself in. I'm not sure Carter had anything to do with it. Carter then tried a rescue mission, remember? The Delta Force. Very ballsy high-risk plan which might have worked if not for a sudden sandstorm. If the rescue had succeeded, Carter would have been a hero. He also would have won re-election if reagan's people hadn't bribed the Iranians into holding onto the hostages. Bribing them with more shipments. WQant to talk about helping Iranian Islamists look at Ollie North. Carter was an amazing president in many ways but that Middle East situation and the post-Vietnam weakness of the US HE INHERITED really did him in. Carter negotiated the Camp David Accord though, quite an accomplishment, built a huge clean fuekls program which Reagan tore down (terrible thing Reagan did) and he helped bring about the fall of the Soviet Union with a lot of diplomacy with the Soviets including the SALT accords. Carter's diplomacy more than Reagan's new nukes softened the Spoviets toward us and made the Cold War seem foolish and wasteful, which is always was from day one. If JFK hadn't been murderd he would have ended the Cold War in the 60's.
