As to your analogy with D-Day (and other such analogies), the most often heard distinction is that then we were are war with another nation, Germany, and the objective was unconditional surrender of that government. Now we are trying to support a government in Iraq while that nation itself (if you can call it a nation) struggles internally to decide if the government will rule. This isn't a drive to the Rhine; its much more analagous to civil war. Perhaps more like Viet-Nam?

It is not inconsistent to say, as regards Iraq, step back and let the Iraqis do what they seem so intent on doing. If Sunni and Shiite battle each other, must our military be engaged in refereeing the struggle? The Iraqis won't stand up and take on the burden of government and of defending government.

I think the distinction is valid...perhaps you do not.
