Just speculation here, but...

Bush stated in no uncertain terms that Iraq is vital to American interests, yet then stated that America's patience and commitment with the Iraqi government wasn't open-ended. OK. What happens if nothing has changed a year from now? Do we leave - or do we overthrow the government?

We're training and equipping the Shia dominated security forces. The Shia vastly outnumber the Sunnis, and at some point the Shia dominated security forces and Shia militias will feel sufficiently confident - with assistance from Iran - to take on the Sunnis. What if the elected government asks us to leave so they can end the sectarian violence the old fashioned way - by killing every Sunni who opposes them?
